New Universal Citizen Income Program Launched

The Head of Government, Clara Brugada, led the delivery of the Universal Citizen Income Program (ICU), which consists of a support of 2,000 pesos every two months and is expected to reach 77,000 people aged 57 to 59 by 2025, becoming a universal coverage program for this age group.

In the capital's Zocalo, Brugada emphasized that the Universal Citizen Income is unique in Mexico and guarantees the right to a vital minimum of resources for the population, a right enshrined in the Political Constitution of Mexico City since its approval in 2017.

The capital's leader explained that the ICU is aimed at people aged 57 to 59 who face labor and health difficulties, as they are often marginalized in the job market and begin to have health problems. This initiative is part of a universal social protection network that began with the senior pension created by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and continued by President Claudia Sheinbaum with the Women's Wellbeing pension for ages 60 to 64, later extending to men in the same age range in Mexico City.

To access the Universal Citizen Income, the following requirements must be met: be between 57 and 59 years old, reside permanently in Mexico City, not receive other government economic assistance of the same nature, and present the required documentation, which includes a valid official identification with a photo, a birth certificate if the date of birth is not visible on the identification, CURP, a current proof of address, and a unique population registry key, if necessary.

This delivery of the program corresponds to the second of the Universal Citizen Income and the first of 2025. In the first phase of this year, more than 40,000 people have benefited, with a projection to reach 77,000 beneficiaries by the end of the year. It is important to highlight that this initiative is part of the Social Protection Network of Mexico City, which aims to support the most vulnerable sectors of the population, thereby strengthening the social fabric and providing necessary support in times of economic difficulty.
